    Nutritional Definitions

    Energy

The body requires energy to function properly. Everything our body does uses energy. Energy is measured in calories (kcal) or kilojoules (kJ). The energy value that comes from the contents of soft drinks is derived from, carbohydrate, fat, organic acid and protein. The style and intensity of the daily exercise each of us takes is relative to the amount of energy and hence calories/kilojoules that is required to help sustain a healthy body.

The recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 per day (women) and 2,500 per day (men).

    Protein

Proteins are present in all living beings and are essential for the structure, function and regulation of the body’s cells, tissues and organs. Each protein has unique functions. Proteins are essential components of muscles, skin, bones and the body as a whole.
Commonly found sources of dietary protein include poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products and meat. Other good sources being Vegetables, pulses nuts and seeds.

    Carbohydrate

The primary function of carbohydrate is to provide energy for the body, especially the brain and the nervous system. Carbohydrate is made up of starches and sugars which provide the majority of energy that your body requires. Your liver breaks down carbohydrates into glucose (blood sugar), which is used for energy for the body. Sugars are a primary source of carbohydrate and are added to soft drinks both to impart sweetness and give mouth feel texture.

Sugars can be derived from a number of sources but for soft drinks this is typically from refined natural sugar (beet or cane) or Fruit Juices.

    Total Fat

Total Fat is a nutritional component of food and is a concentrated energy source in the diet. A water-soluble substance that is normally solid at room temperature that belongs to a group of chemicals that are main constituents of food. Fats are esters of glycerol and fatty acids. There are two main types of fat: saturated fat and unsaturated fat. Saturated fat is often from animal sources - but there is some saturated fat in vegetable fats as well. Unsaturated fat comes mainly from vegetable and fish oils.

    Sodium

Sodium is a mineral; your body needs a small amount of sodium to help maintain normal function of muscles, nerves and fluid balance. Sodium intake is recommended to be less than 3,000 milligrams daily. One teaspoon of table salt contains about 2,000 milligrams of sodium. The difference between "sodium" and "salt" can be confusing, To calculate the amount of salt, you need to multiply the sodium value by 2.5.

Sodium is a mineral found in various foods including table salt.
